There are many reasons women and men come to the Centre for Minor Surgery for earlobe repair in Toronto. In some cases, the earlobes sag and become stretched because of heavy earrings and the natural aging process. Sometimes people who have intentionally stretched out their earlobes wearing gauges want the large holes closed up. Others are disfigured though an accident or injury.
What are split earlobes?
Split earlobes are elongations or complete splits of an earlobe piercing usually as a result of the use of heavier earrings. The elongation extends the piercing hole downwards towards the bottom of the earlobe ultimately leading to a complete split of the lobe over time. Many women who frequently wear heavy earrings will experience the problem of partial then complete splitting of their earlobes; the problem usually occurs on both sides.
How is a split earlobe repaired?
At CFMS, our plastic surgeons repair split earlobes using local anesthetic. The skin in the area of the elongated or split piercing is surgically removed to create a surface that will heal together cleanly and close the split. Contrary to common misconception, it is not enough to simply stitch the split back together. It is also important to understand that in repairing the split or elongated piercing, the surgeon completely closes up the hole for the piercing. If desired, a new piercing can be made adjacent to the site when the split has completely healed, which usually takes 6 to 8 weeks. Surgical techniques that attempt to leave a normal-sized piercing hole after surgery are unsuccessful and can create healing problems.
Recovery time is minimal. Stitches are removed approximately 10 to 14 days after the procedure.
The procedure is not insured by OHIP. Visit our FAQs page for more information about minor surgery at our centre.
